1934, SALVADOR DALÍ 30 YEARS OLD
The year 1934 had an exciting start for Dalí. On January 30, he married Gala in Paris. A moment in which Dalí began to distance himself from the surrealist collective. Who had agreed not to participate in the prestigious annual exhibition of the Salon des Indépendants at the Grand Palais in Paris. However, Dalí decided to participate, a fact that greatly infuriated Breton and his followers who demanded that Dalí would be excluded from the surrealist group for his “counter-revolutionary acts”. Dalí, was able to defend himself in a special meeting of the group. True to his irreverent personality, the painter turned the encounter into a hilarious spectacle. Arguing that he had the flu, Dalí showed up to the appointment with a thermometer in his mouth and several woolen sweaters that he took off as his parliament progressed, in which he defined himself as a true surrealist. Unable to contain their laughter at the spectacle, Breton and his followers ended up giving up on their idea of expelling Dalí. On November 7, Dalí and Gala left France for New York where Julien Levy was preparing a new individual exhibition of the artist, which was a great success. He then had another exhibition at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford. Dalí opened the exhibition with a conference in which he condensed his artistic vision. “The only difference between a crazy man and me is that I am not crazy. I am able to distinguish between dreams and the real world”, affirmed the painter, who also insisted that his paintings were limited to transmitting images from the unconscious: “It is completely natural that the public does not understand my paintings I’m the first one who doesn’t understand them.” Upon arriving from his trip, his father proposed to him to hold a meeting to try to renew their relationship. Dalí accepted the offer which was settled with the reconciliation of the painter and the notary. Father and son ended up melting into an exciting hug.
