Description
1986 – SALVADOR DALÍ 81 YEARS OLD
After Gala’s death, Dalí’s grief was partly eased by the constant attention he received from the Spanish authorities. In July 1982, King Juan Carlos I granted the painter the title of “Marquès de Dalí de Púbol”. In 1983, the same year in which the artist was the subject of a successful anthological exhibition in Madrid and Barcelona, Dalí stopped painting. The surrealist author was no longer able to embody his ideas on canvas. His hands were shaking and he had lost his legendary technical precision. Secluded in Púbol since Gala’s death, Dalí spent practically every day in bed. He seemed to be preparing for his end. Dalí came close to dying on August 31, 1984 due to a fire. After convalescing in the hospital, Dalí settled in the Galatea Tower of the Figueres Theatre-Museum. Where, with increasingly precarious health, the painter would spend his last years. Dalí’s life ended definitively on January 23, 1989, while he was listening to one of his favorite operas, Tristan and Isolde. The artist was 84 years old.
